Our Team

We are a team of Athlete-Trainers who care passionately about your health and fitness.  We created CrossFit SOAR to help you take your fitness level - and overall well-being - to a higher level.

We have worked with a tremendous range of clients with all types of fitness levels - ranging from tactical operators and elite athletes to first timers and heavily unconditioned candidates.  The nature of our workouts is the same; only the intensity level varies.

I began playing hockey as soon as I could walk.  I played 12 months a year all the way up to my first year in college.  I have played at the local, state, national and international level.  During my sophomore year in college I discovered Crossfit while searching for new ways to stay in shape.  I had never touched a weight or completed a pull-up until I stumbled onto Crossfit.com and tried my first WOD.

I am a strength and conditioning geek.   I try to read and try everything that comes out from the big dawgs in strength training, olympic lifting, nutrition, sports performance, and Crossfit.  I have trained people for sport as well as general fitness using Crossfit for several years now.   I am also the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Morris Hills Girls Track and Field Team.  I am excited for the opportunity to coach and train at Crossfit Soar and I look forward to helping you achieve your fitness goals.

I have been a lifetime athlete.  As a youth, I competed in baseball, basketball, football, and track and field.  When one sport ended, another began.  By the time I was in high school, I started lifting weights.  I read the "fitness"  magazines, bought the shakes, and most importantly, the ideals of the bodybuilding community.  I wanted to become huge and strong so I could look good and perform even better.  After years of lifting weights in the gym doing the normal program, I had never noticed any difference in my appearance or strength...

One of my good friends mentioned to me about how I should try CrossFit.  I read his blogs about these crazy workouts that seemed just like super-sets I had done in the gym.  One day, I decided to visit him and participate in one of his "WODs".  The gym was full of people of all ages, both male and female.  I figured, with my background, I could do pretty well and show these people how it's done.  Half way through the workout, I noticed that many of the people (40-50 years OLDER than me) were just finishing up.  After the most humbling half-hour of my life, I came to a very quick realization that I was not as fit as I could be.  That's when I decided that I needed to start crossfitting.

I came home and was happy to find that there was a CrossFit in my own hometown of Hawthorne.  I began studying nutrition, exercises, mobility, and everything I could get my hands on.  I reached personal strength records that I hadn't come close to in my entire life within weeks!  I received my CrossFit Level 1 certification in November and look to expand my knowledge of all the modalities of fitness.  I look forward to seeing you at the classes and hope you can enjoy the workouts as much as I do!

Ballet, kickboxing, yoga, Bootcamp, Pilates, long distance running...You name it, I've done it but nothing kept me interested for more than six months until I found Crossfit.  Part of the reason I love Crossfit is that it's constantly varied. Also, the physical results are phenomenal. However, what Crossfit does for me mentally far surpasses the physical aspect of any fitness program.

Crossfit empowers me as a woman. I am a single mother of three year old twins. At times I find myself in potentially vulnerable situations and am surprised by how confident I feel. When I think about the fitness goals I have accomplished doing Crossfit I feel prepared to handle so much not just physically but mentally and emotionally.

Steve Keefer

Athlete & Founder

I'm an old warrior/athlete who has been revitalized through CrossFit.  In my former life, I considered myself invincible and consistently challenged the limits of my physicality.  Unfortunately, during my subsequent business career I made some poor lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, bad diet, minimal sleep, etc.).  After hundreds of thousands of air miles all the abuse finally caught up with me, resulting in quite a few aches and pains and ultimately, major spinal surgery.

Similar to many hailing from the Special Operations Forces, I embraced CrossFit as one of my pillars to health, fitness and well-being.  In my latest business venture, US Elite (US-EliteGear.com), I built a CrossFit box to blow off steam and train with friends, family and staff.  The results are astounding - although frequently humbling (my son, who is also a CrossFit certified trainer, got his first muscle-up as a 15-year-old a full year before his old man!).  Anyway, we are pleased to offer the local community the benefits of CrossFit SOAR and invite you on a trip "Beyond Your Limits".
