What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a general fitness program and lifestyle that borrows the best practices from a wide array of sport, strength, and conditioning programs. CrossFit athletes run, jump, lift, throw, row, climb, and move their own body weight in workouts that are fun, varied, and effective. Crossfit is a program that allows anybody - from professional athletes to those looking to get in shape for the first time in their life - to reach and surpass their fitness goals.
CrossFit was developed by Greg Glassman, a California based gymnast, trainer, and coach, who had noticed a deficiency in generally accepted fitness training as it related to improving both specific athletic performance and general lifestyle enjoyment. Coach Glassman designed a program that focused on functional, everyday movements, patterned in a fashion to derive a huge strength and metabolic gain from short, intense periods of effort.
CrossFit has since become the preferred training program for professional athletes, mixed martial artists, military and law enforcement personnel, and countless doctors, teachers, homemakers, students, and anyone who wants to improve their quality of life, achieve a higher level of fitness, and realize a greater sense of personal empowerment and accomplishment.
CrossFit is for anyone. Every workout can have the load (weight), duration (time or repetitions) or intensity adjusted to best suit the participant's needs and fitness level. In the CrossFit universe this is called "scaling" and is the most important aspect of developing healthy, safe, and happy athletes. Each workout we perform can be scaled so that an experienced athlete and a newcomer can perform a similar workout, attain a huge strength and conditioning benefit, and perform safely and without injury. As an athlete becomes familiar with the movements and methodology of CrossFit they naturally begin to "scale up" their workouts, and can thus see the upward trend of their progress as it takes off.
